Welcome to the Existentialist Republic Wiki

When the Federal Government fails its people, the States have every right, every tool, and every Constitutional authority to chart their own course. The Existentialist Republic is committed to education, research, and action to build a better democracy; this site is our action headquarters and our education center.

Our premise: to fight fascism and preserve government that works for the people, States should use their powers.

Since Trump's 2025 inauguration, our Federal institutions have already become so corrupted and entrenched, that waiting for them to reform themselves — whether through civil lawsuits, midterm elections, or a whistle-blowing civil service — is no longer an option.

In our interconnected world, the need for a strong democracy is clear.

"Most Americans are already on this side of the argument when you say 'people are dying because healthcare is for profit' or 'people are working full time and sleeping outside' or even 'people can't afford to have families on what they're being paid.' Stated clearly, these are moral emergencies, rather than policy disputes, and there is no room for half measures when the problems are this serious." — Christopher Armitage

Government can make lives better, despite differences of opinion on policy, when constitutional checks and balances are respected. Instead, we're living a scenario where the rich get richer, and everyone else is less free and less safe. If we cannot meet this moment by forcing the Federal government to follow its own rules, it's our moral imperative to strengthen democracy in our states.

States have the dexterity to act rapidly and directly.

The Trump regime carrying out the Project 2025 agenda will not change course. The right-wing Supreme Court that supports this plan will not change course. A captured Congress has no ability to change our course.

The Existentialist Republic provides state legislation models, targeted campaigns, and pressure for criminal prosecutions at state level. These are actions that need not (and must not!) wait for the outcome of some future election. Immediate improvement for Americans' access to health, security, and economic stability await us when states use the constitutional powers they've already been granted.

The Federalism we're promoting is legal, feasible, and has been demonstrated over and over again in our states.

"Washington State filed 97 lawsuits against the federal government during the first Trump term with a 95 percent win rate. California went further, building an entire parallel regulatory infrastructure: its own cap-and-trade program, vehicle emissions standards that 17 other states adopted, the largest state-run paid family leave program in the country. New York and Illinois took different approaches to the same problem, New York passing the TRUST Act to protect state tax returns from federal overreach while Illinois became a sanctuary state with legislation prohibiting local law enforcement from participating in warrantless abductions. Colorado created a public option for health insurance. Several states are now exploring public banking following North Dakota’s century-old model." — Christopher Armitage

Other examples include disregarding federal restrictions on marijuana, disregarding federal restrictions on firearms, disregarding national abortion policy, disregarding federal immigration policy. States both "red" and "blue" already use the powers they have, and the Supreme Court agreed that they have this authority.

Not so fast. Is this ... "Soft Secession"? What is this?

That's a great question, and an important one.

What if we want to be optimistic, want to wait things out, want to focus on gaining a Democratic majority in Congress?

Possibly the most important question, so let's respond at length. Believe us when we say, we all know that place.

Publishing in March 2026, in his article Is Secession Safer Than Permanent Christo-Fascist Electoral Autocracy?, Christopher Armitage wrote:

"The Washington Post analyzed more than a hundred and sixty federal lawsuits with substantive rulings against the current administration and found defiance or circumvention of court orders in roughly one third of them. The Supreme Court ruled in June 2025 that lower federal courts may no longer issue nationwide injunctions, an uncontested power those courts had exercised for 249 years, now the Roberts court has more power than ever. Harms the administration inflicts can now only be remedied one plaintiff at a time while the conduct continues everywhere else, which is not a judicial ruling so much as a thumb on the scale toward single party rule. The federal funding apparatus has been converted into a loyalty mechanism, with billions frozen or terminated at universities, research institutions, and programs as a condition of political compliance. A federal judge in California described the administration’s conduct as “coercive and retaliatory,” a “playbook” aimed at bringing institutions “to their knees” to force ideological compliance. That’s where we are, with internment camps already holding nearly 70,000 people and more under construction, nearly two billion dollars a day spent on the Iran war and war crimes committed openly, food and medical care withheld from blue states as political punishment, a MAGA paramilitary invading cities to abduct people based on the color of their skin, and a government actively covering up the largest child sex trafficking operation in American history, one the president and much of his cabinet participated in."

Defiance or circumvention of court orders — will continue. Perversion of the federal funding apparatus — has already gouged entire cohorts of civil servants, scientific researchers, and more. Immigrants, pregnant people, people marked as dissidents, losing their liberties or lives in ways that can't ever be recovered ... are we willing to continue to endanger our fellow Americans on a chance that in January of 2027 or 2029, things will be different?

We're not willing to wait! And we hope you'll join us in working towards a better future than that.
